“Ned” as anyone local, or semi close to the community would call it is our next leg of the adventure. Sitting at 8,228 feet elevation, you have three options to get here, it all just depends on the scenery you want. Above “google’s way” is highlighted taking you past Maryland Mountain and up highway 119. A slightly more exciting way will take you up 119 until you get off and go behind the open space. This way takes a little longer, but might add the sweeter views. Or, you can take 46 directly north, and close to Tremont Mountain for some more scenic “off the beaten pathway” experiences. For this leg, you’ll exit off i70 toward Central City sitting at 8,510 feet. Mine tours, whitewater rafting and the thing Central City is known for, Casino gambling are all amenities while you’re here. Don’t stop here, continue your journey on to Back Hawk, 8,537 feet elevation. Black Hawk then and now: Central City is home to 6 casinos, whereas Blackhawk is home to more than 18. Some are homey, some are fancy, but you’re sure to find the gambling gig that’s best for you (and hopefully your wallet!) Not into gambling? Mine Tours - Hidee Mine. This is known as “the richest half mile in earth” you can mine the vein or tour the caves. Be sure to schedule through the mine for this adventure. On this leg of the #roadtripacrossamerica you have some options on how you get from Steamboat Springs to Idaho Springs. There’s the way that “google maps” would take you down highway 40 back to Silverthorn and down i70...or there’s the more scenic, more adventurous way through Kremling and the Hot Sulphur Springs then through Winter Park and down to Idaho Springs at 7,526 feet elevation. This is a road trip, right, this is the way you’re going to see all the views. But really, you do you! If you go the suggested route, break up your drive with a dip in the Hot Sulphur Springs, 7680 feet. This little town is a secret spot that will remind you what old Colorado was like. From Breck, you’re continuing almost directly north to Steamboat Springs, Colorado, elevation 6,732 feet. The COVID update in this community is requiring visitors to wear masks at all times, so be sure to do so during your 2020 summer visit. While in town, you’ll want to stop at Strawberry hot springs, tube the river, hike to Fish Creek Falls, and if you’re really goin’ after a good time golf at Haymaker. Strawberry hot springs is a beautiful place to take a dip in town. If you got for a one day trip, this hot springs should be at the top of your list. Summer is here and now more than ever it is necessary to have your vehicle's A/C system working at its best. We know how unbearable it can be to get in your car on a hot day only to find that your air conditioning is blowing hot air. You'll still be able to get to your destination with the windows down, but it won't be fun! To let you in on a little secret, this is the best drive of the road trip. From Aspen head over independence pass on highway 82 - this two lane wonder sits at 12,095 feet elevation. Maybe pack a lunch so you can picnic overlooking the alpine lakes at the top. This is a sketchy road, so pay attention. If your a cyclist, this might be a bucket list item to knock off. There’s new views around every corner and it is down right beautiful. You’ll come down in the college mountain rage near our previous legs of the trip, but this time you’re going to go north on 24 through Leadville and drive “the back road” through Leadville to Copper mountain and take I70 to Breckenridge . Take highway 82 through Glenwood going south and you’re off to Aspen, Colorado, 8,000 feet. Aspen is home to 4 outstanding Ski Resorts and the famous X games. In the summer, you can check out the views with a ride up Snowmass, mountain biking and more. Walk through history with the John Denver Sanctuary park and garden before or after stopping downtown for lunch. A foodies guide to eating Aspen can be found here. The next leg of our trip will take us out of Moab (the back way if you’d like to stop at Fischer Towers) and up to i70. On i70 continue east towards Colorado. Passing the Colorado border, you’ll continue through to Glenwood Springs, Colorado sitting at 5,761 feet. On this three hour drive stop for lunch in Fruita. If you’re looking for a secret Italian hot spot you’ll hit the Hot Tomato in Fruita, Colorado, 4,514 feet. The pizza’s great, but the Stromboli’s where it’s at...just so you know. If you’re a wine junky, the Palisade wineries will be a great stop to stock up for your collection. This next journey takes us from one adult playground to another. From the Colorado weather, and higher elevation of 8,000 feet in Telluride we’ll travel north-west back down to 4,026 feet elevation in Moab, Utah. Here, you can spend anywhere from a day to a week or more adventuring in the hot desert and enjoying all the red sand has to offer. This is definitely a place you’ll want to jeep if you enjoyed the Colorado mountain pass from #leg4 of the #roadtripaccrossamerica: Imogene Pass. You’ve got options as you continue to Leg 4 of your #roadtripaccrossamerica from Ouray to Telluride. You have the safe way, and the over-a-pass adventure. The Safe Way A 1.5 hour drive north of 550, west on 62 and south on 145 will take you about an hour to get to the incomparable Telluride, Colorado 8,750 feet. A short driving day will leave you with plenty of time for all the great things you’ll want to do while in town. Over-A-Pass-Adventure Taking Imogene pass is a shorter distance, more scenic option to arrive in Telluride. This is a late summertime 4-wheel adventure, if you’re up for it.
