Snow Safety Tips

We are mid-way through winter, and the snow is still in our forecast here in the Boulder, CO area. While most of us chose to hibernate inside during a snowstorm, some of us still need to travel to work, family, and to run errands in town. If you’re planning on leaving the house in an upcoming snowfall, here are some snow safety tips to keep in mind, both while on the road and while walking around!

Always dress appropriately for the weather forecast. If you will be walking outside in the snow, be sure to have the right attire for the weather. Bundle up in your snow coat, make sure to wear gloves, hats, and long socks, and make sure you have the right footwear to be able to grip the snow while walking.

Salt your sidewalks/driveway with salt before the storm. This will help the snow clear faster and will make it easier to shovel the snow after the storm. While shoveling snow, be careful not to lift any amount that is too heavy at once and always use your legs to lift rather than your back.

While driving, be sure to drive slowly and carefully. Try not to slam on your brakes or accelerate too quickly. Be aware of your surroundings and share the road! Make sure that your vehicle’s windshield wipers are recently replaced and that all of your exterior lights are working properly.

If you plan on going outside during any upcoming snowy days, be sure to stay prepared and be safe!
